They Just Don't Get It! 7 Ways for Geeks and Non-geeks to Get Along
by Steve Marlin
On Thursday evening, April 12th, 88 chapter dinner meeting attendees were double-teamed by a dynamic duo consisting of Paul Glen (the geek) and Maria McManus (the non-geek). We often hear, and experience, that good communication is an important - or maybe the most important - aspect of successful projects. Especially in IT we know that there has always been a disconnect between geeks and non-geeks when it comes to all phases of software and hardware projects. What can happen if that disconnect persists? People can suffer, the business can suffer, and about $80 billion (that’s with a B) per year in just this country can be wasted on failed projects.
Recap of April Pasadena Breakfast Meeting
by Jeb Bowdoin
On Thursday, April 19th the PMI-LA Chapter presented Kaiser Permanente with an award for its outstanding support of the Pasadena breakfast meeting. Kaiser has provided a wonderful venue for the breakfast meeting for ten years, inclusive of meeting rooms, parking, and access to a great cafeteria. Deby Covey, PMI-LA VP of Strategy, President Elect presented the award to Kaiser’s Bonner Meudell, Vice President of Health Plan Process Administration. Ms. Meudell was an early champion of the Kaiser PMO and works with the Kaiser Project Management Council to ensure project managers meet Kaiser project management standards, while also ensuring project managers receive rigorous training.
Since last year, Lisa Priester has administered the SharePoint “intranet” site for the Los Angeles chapter. She manages user accounts, including the ever-popular “password reset” requests, and trains board members and volunteers in using SharePoint for collaboration and communications. Lisa also resolves technical issues with the site, working directly with the service provider. In June she will present a PMI-LA workshop on using SharePoint for project management.
