Lee Mandley Volunteer of the Month: November 2019

Volunteer of the Month

Hiro Hirashiki, PMP

Hiro stepped up to lead the 45th anniversary celebration for the LA Chapter this year.  He utilized project management principles - a project charter, budget, status updates etc working with a small team of 10 people. They had certain criteria in mind: lots of networking time, a sit-down meal, social and fun event for guests, and where the chapter could share some history with past and present members. Hiro held bi-weekly meetings from February to June. He oversaw all areas, such as helping with the analysis for a suitable venue, overseeing the brochure and communications, arranging the photographer, coordinating the PMI speaker, and helping with the set up on the day of the event.

When the Board Members were concerned about spending too much, he was able to respond appropriately.  He managed to reduce the actuals to less than $5,000 to keep within budget. And when an issue arose and members could not register on the new web site, he was quick to help with a fix. After the event he even followed up with the lessons learned.

Hiro is a great team player and leader; able to remain very calm and help coordinate all areas, as well as helping fix issues as they occur. This was a great event in July, it met all the initial objectives, and was enjoyed by all the attendees.  Thank you Hiro for going above and beyond!

Great job and congratulations, Hiro!

About the Lee Mandley Volunteer of the Month Award:

Founding Director of the PMI-LA Alhambra Community Meeting located at DeVry, Lee was a Construction PM and a long time member of the chapter.  He was the voice and liaison for the San Gabriel Valley members east of Pasadena.  Lee was the first director to institute round table discussions on interesting Project Management Topics when a speaker had to cancel at the last moment.   Since 2012, we have presented the ‘Volunteer of the Month’ award to a key volunteer who exhibits the outstanding trait of working “outside-the-box” to ensure that chapter operations are running smoothly in their area.  This award was renamed later  that year to  honor Lee Mandley.
