PMI-LA Book Club Recap

Chapter News

The PMI-LA community recently gathered for our latest Book Club session featuring Atomic Habits by James Clear — an engaging and highly interactive discussion focused on how small behavioral changes can drive meaningful personal and professional transformation.

With strong participation and lively dialogue throughout the session, members explored how the book’s ideas extend far beyond personal development and into the everyday realities of project management.

From Personal Habits to Project Leadership

One of the most interesting themes to emerge was how participants initially approached the book through a personal lens, only to realize during discussion how directly its concepts apply to workplace systems and project delivery.

Members connected James Clear’s Four Laws of Behavior Change to real project management challenges:

  1. Make it Obvious (Cue) — Creating clear workflows and expectations
  2. Make it Attractive (Craving) — Designing systems people actually want to use
  3. Make it Easy (Response) — Reducing friction in processes and communication
  4. Make it Satisfying (Reward) — Reinforcing positive team behaviors

These principles sparked conversations about improving email management, documentation practices, stakeholder communication, and team collaboration — showing how habit design can improve both productivity and project outcomes.

Practical Ideas Shared by the Community

Breakout discussions allowed attendees to exchange real-world strategies they are already applying, including:

  • Time-blocking email to reduce reactive work
  • Using task management integrations to prevent lost action items
  • Creating templates to streamline approvals and onboarding
  • Leveraging AI tools for note-taking and task capture
  • Establishing communication boundaries to protect focus time

Participants emphasized that project managers often operate in highly reactive environments, making intentional systems and habits essential for sustainable performance.

Identity-Based Change: A Powerful Takeaway

A standout insight discussed across multiple groups was the idea of identity-based habits — shifting from goal-focused thinking to behavior aligned with who we want to become as professionals.

Rather than asking, “How do I complete this task?” participants reflected on questions like:

“What would the most effective version of myself do in this situation?”

This mindset resonated strongly with attendees looking to strengthen leadership presence and long-term career growth.

Learning Through Conversation

The PMI-LA Book Club continues to demonstrate that learning happens best through shared experience. Members openly exchanged perspectives, challenged ideas, and connected concepts from the reading directly to project environments across industries.

The session also celebrated community milestones, including congratulations to Phoebe Johnson on her appointment as PMI-LA’s new VP of Operations/President-Elect — a reminder of how leadership development and community engagement go hand in hand within the chapter.

Where Ideas Become Action

PMI-LA Book Club is more than a discussion group — it is a collaborative space where ideas turn into practical action. By connecting professional frameworks with real experiences, participants leave not only inspired but equipped with strategies they can immediately apply.

We thank all members who joined the conversation and contributed their insights.
