Topic: Identifying and Applying Strategies For Overcoming Resistance To Change

speaker carla fair wright

If it isn't broken, that won't work here. We are not ready. People resist change and it can create major problems on a project if not dealt with properly from the beginning.

In this session, you will be given techniques to identify and manage resistance to change. Learn how to mitigate stakeholder resistance and implement change strategies effectively.

About the Event:

When an organization introduces a change with a project or initiative, that change needs to be effectively managed on both the technical side and the people side. A technical side focus ensures that the change is developed, designed and delivered effectively. The discipline of project management provides the structure, processes and tools to make this happen. A people side focus ensures that the change is embraced, adopted and utilized by the employees who have to do their jobs differently as a result of the project. –Integrating Change, “Prosci"

One of the most common problems which project managers face is stakeholder resistance to change. Stakeholder resistance can threaten even the most well thought out project plan and the most flawless execution. Should we consider a project that delivers a solution that is never used by the stakeholders a success?

This session will explore the more challenging areas of behavioral change management on projects. It’s important to know how resistance manifests and how to overcome its various forms. Such resistance may take a number of forms—high project team turnover, conflict and quarrels, decrease in the quality of deliverables and, of course, the expression of a lot of reasons why the project will not work.

Project Managers are often encouraged to include key stakeholders in the decision-making process because it enhances the likelihood of buy-in. Yet this is not always possible or advisable. Examples that render this advice impractical or unfeasible include confidentiality issues, time constraints, or necessary secrecy in highly competitive markets.
