2017 Volunteer Appreciation Event and Awards

We had a great turnout for the Volunteer Appreciation Event held recently at Truxton's Restaurant in Westchester. We had plenty of time for networking, as well as good food and drinks. We honored our volunteers, handed out gifts, and presented some special awards for 2017.

  • 2 Individual Awards: Jeb Bowdoin, Vick Madenian
  • Charlie Lopinsky Award: Chris O'Connell

Volunteer Team Award: Social Media Team

The Social Media Team researched and selected a new tool (CoSchedule) and then became proficient with it. It is used for creating, scheduling and improving Social Media posts across all three channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, & Facebook).  They advanced and increased the chapter’s Social Media presence, and member usage compared to previous years.     
Additionally, the team began the process of updating their Social Media Guide, began an ongoing effort to analyze potential sources for subscription images, reconnected Google Analytics to resume collecting metrics showing actual website traffic from Social Media, migrated our LinkedIn Group page to a Company page for more versatility, instituted Registration Page checkboxes to show user sources, and (best of all) kept a 5 person team together all year.

Volunteer Team Award: Facilities Team

James and Christine have delivered facilities based on requests each time they were asked during the past year. They work with the requestor and the vendor until their requests are completed.  They negotiate well with the vendors even when there are constant changes.  Their goal is to satisfy their customers PMI-LA!  After the event that is held in the facility they work with the vendors on settling the accounts providing timely information required by the Finance Team.



Volunteer Team Award: Fisher House – Military & Community Outreach

The Fisher House Project supported community outreach as well as Military Outreach this year. It started as a campaign to raise funds for Fisher House in order to provide pantry items and possibly a Veteran’s Day event for the 11/11 residents.  The team exceeded the goal by nearly $200 and successfully gathered donations for over 600 travel sized toiletry items for visiting family members of our wounded veterans.  An evening meal was prepared by PMI-LA volunteers for Fisher House families when the donations were presented.

Volunteer Team Award: Kerry Plinton Fun Day

This new team proposed and implemented the first Annual Fun Day event. It was named in honor of Kerry Plinton (a key volunteer and a Board member) to embody his enthusiastic spirit for the LA Chapter and have a fun event for members and their families to get together in a different and relaxed setting. On a very short timescale, the team put together a ‘picnic in the park’ at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. It was a great family event, with lots of food and activities for all, and it brought in several members that we had not seen at other events.

Volunteer Award: Jeb Bowdoin

James BowdoinJeb Bowdoin has been serving as a long time Director of the Pasadena Breakfast Meeting, and has also given presentations at the meeting venue each year.  Our relationship with Kaiser lasted nearly 15 years thanks to Jeb’s leadership.  Due to contract changes, we were forced to locate an alternate venue for this meeting.  Jeb led his team to relocate to a close by location at Parsons, and they expanded the meeting using alternate formats to deliver key content to their attendees.  They have implemented successful round table discussions and remote streamed learning from ProjectManagement.com.

Volunteer Award: Vick Madenian

member madenian vickVick Madenian is currently the Associate VP of Communications.

In addition to his normal duties, which included: onboarding & training a completely new set of webmasters; creating & applying structure & style guidelines to site pages & content; decreasing response time & increasing quality of ticket postings; and working with other VPs to organize & update all email distribution lists, Vick has performed additional important actions:


  • On his own initiative created and distributed a new, comprehensive form for assembling and posting event content on the website; and trained & assisted event volunteers in using the form.
  • Completely redesigned the Volunteers Only page, making it much easier and more straightforward to use.
  • Personally contacted many new members who had website login issues, talking with them about the chapter and its value and encouraging them to actively participate in the chapter activities.

Charlie Lopinsky Volunteer of the Year Award: Chris OConnell

member oconnell chrisChris OConnell has been working on the Volunteer Management System from the fall of 2016. This year he worked on finalizing the program and then implementing it for the chapter. Unfortunately for Chris, the interest waned and soon he was implementing this program with very little support. Soon it was a one-man team, but this did not deter Chris and he stuck to his principles and his commitment to the chapter and completed the project on schedule and on budget. We now encourage all our volunteers to log their hours into the new VMS system.

As that project ended Chris also threw himself in to help the Nomination Committee, where he served with distinction. He is a vocal supporter of the chapter and always finds ways to improve our chapter’s results through process improvements.
