University Center at the College of the Canyons
Speaker: Hector Gascon
Topic: 21st Century Conflicts in the Workplace
Economic rewards of the 21st century will favor organizations whose leaders can harness the unique traits of millennials (Twenge & Campbell, 2008). Organizations are being transformed from boomer-centric into millennial-centric (Ferri-Reed, 2014). Human resources practitioners, leaders, managers, entrepreneurs, and businesspeople need to solve the unique challenge regarding how baby-boomers and millennials can work together harmoniously in the workplace (Delullis & Flinko, 2016).
The silver tsunami refers to the 78 million baby-boomers, who are individuals born between 1946 and 1964, who are or will be retiring. Millennials, who are individuals born between 1980 and 2000, comprise 80 million individuals who will flood into the workplace in 2020. Tulgan and Martin (2001) noted, “Organizations that can’t—or won’t—customize training, career paths, incentives, and work responsibilities need a wake-up call” (p. 21).
Description of the Problem and Its Importance
Workplaces have intragroup conflicts between generations that include relationship, task, and procedural conflicts that affect job satisfaction. The findings of my recent primary research might help management understand millennials to mitigate the negative effects of relationship, task, and procedural conflicts (Jehn, 1997).
