Book Club

As project managers, we strive to continuously improve our project management skills. Two of the best methods are to actually perform the skill or to witness someone else performing the skill who is willing to respond to any questions you might have. A third method that we believe is as meaningful as the former two is to join the Los Angeles PMI Book Club.

At the Book Club, we discuss popular project management books in a structured format, and we conclude the similarities and differences between the author’s approach to management and our own.

The Book Club process was designed so everyone contributes equally. We all have the opportunity to discuss and hear other project managers' or would-be-project-managers' opinions to relevant topics. We are amazed at the different insights as we broaden our understanding of project management principles.

After we finish discussing the book at hand, one of the members volunteers to write a book report for the LA PMI’s eBlast. We then select the next book from a list of nominated books, based on a brief synopsis. Among the books we have read to date: “Napolean on Project Management,” “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” “The Goal,” “Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable About Solving the Most Painful Problems in Business” and “Why Should Anyone Be Led By You”.

Towards the end of the Book Club meeting, one of our members provides a pre-scheduled 10-15 minute "Educational Presentation" on a key project management topic of his or her choice.

In addition to improving your project management skills, you will also have the opportunity to earn PDUs.

If you have any questions about the Book Club or would like to join, please write to Bookclub@pmi-la.org.
