Multi-Chapter | Developing Your Personal Board of Directors: A 90-Minute Interactive Career Development Workshop

Leadership = Power Skills

Your career deserves intentional guidance. One mentor cannot reasonably meet every developmental need, and your employer's support may address only part of your professional journey. A Personal Board of Directors (PBoD) brings together trusted advisors whose different experiences and perspectives help you shape your career path, make decisions, navigate challenges, and follow through on your professional goals.

This interactive workshop introduces a practical framework for building your PBoD: a carefully selected group of trusted advisors who provide ongoing guidance, honest feedback, diverse perspectives, and accountability to support your personal growth. You will explore how mentors, sponsors, challengers, peers, and technical advisors can support your professional development, complemented by coaches, mastermind groups, professional training and development programs, and relevant certifications.

Using the accompanying workbook, you will identify a professional development need, recognize support already present in your network, explore gaps, and draft a personalized request for an advisory conversation. Individual reflection, chat discussions, and a small-group peer advisory exercise will help you turn these concepts into practical next steps.

Whether you are an emerging project manager looking for your first mentor, a mid-career PM preparing to transition into leadership, or a seasoned practitioner seeking greater value from your advisory relationships, this session will give you the framework, tools, and confidence to build and activate a personal board in support of your professional growth.

Registered attendees who participate in the live session are eligible to earn 1.5 PDUs (Power Skills).

Key Takeaways

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Design advisory support around a priority goal. Identify how mentors, sponsors, challengers, peers, and technical advisors can support their individual professional development needs.
  2. Recognize existing support and identify gaps. Map current relationships and identify potential advisors, supportive communities, or opportunities for warm introductions.
  3. Initiate a focused advisory conversation. Draft a personalized outreach message using connect, specify, and appreciate, with a clear purpose and a manageable first request.
  4. Sustain relationships and turn guidance into action. Set expectations, prepare for focused conversations, assess differing advice, and commit to one action within the next seven days.
  5. Contribute to another professional’s growth. Recognize experience and knowledge they can share as a mentor, peer resource, or advisor serving on a friend or colleague's board.
