Multi-Chapter | Seeing the Whole Board: Systems Thinking for Project Managers
Most project problems don't start where they show up. A missed deadline is usually a handoff problem, a priority problem, or an incentive problem that's been quietly building for months. In this session, we'll step back from the task list and look at projects as systems... the loops, delays and tradeoffs that drive what actually happens. You'll see how to spot the patterns behind recurring issues, why the obvious fix often makes things worse, and how to connect day-to-day project decisions to the bigger strategy. Expect real examples, a little humor, and tools you can use on Monday.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the core ideas of systems thinking (feedback loops, delays, unintended consequences) in a project context.
- Map a recurring project problem to find its root cause instead of its symptoms.
- Spot common system traps like fixes that backfire and shifting the burden.
- Connect project-level decisions to organizational strategy and tradeoffs.
