The Gig Economy and Freelance Project Management

The proliferation of the Gig Economy is one of the most transformative global economic trends in the past decade.  In 2020, 59 million Americans, or 36% of the U.S. workforce, engaged in freelance work.  75% of freelancers who left an employer to pursue freelancing full-time report making the same or more income than when they worked a traditional job. Freelancers contributed $1.2 trillion dollars to the U.S economy in annual earnings in 2020, a 22% increase since 2019.  The Gig economy, once thought to be a short-term fad, is here to stay. But what exactly is the Gig Economy? And why should expert project management professionals, both full-time employees of an organization and independent consultants, understand this growing trend?  In this session, attendees will learn what the Gig economy is, what factors contributed to its rapid growth, and what project professionals can do today to stay ahead of the curve in our new and ever-changing world of work.

  • Educates PMs on the history of the Gig Economy and the top growth factors.
  • Demystifies Worker Classification (W2/1099) and clarifies confusing market terms (contractor vs independent contractor, consultant vs freelancer, etc.).
  • Highlights the top 3 benefits of Freelance Project Management (For the freelancer and for the hiring organization).
  • Identifies resources available to project professionals (Recruiters, Talent Marketplaces, Networks and Groups).

Speaker

Rebecca Medina, PMP is the Founder of TalentCheetah, the first digital talent platform in the U.S. for project managers.  She is a PMP® certified Project Professional with over 25 years of hands-on experience managing complex portfolios, primarily in the telecommunications and high-tech industries. She is fluent in diverse frameworks including Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, and Critical Chain. She has extensive experience launching new Project Management Offices and leading program teams in the delivery of successful products and services.  In 2015, after working as a full-time employee for two decades, she transitioned into independent consulting, doing business as Mobile Program Management

Rebecca is an East Los Angeles, California native and former student of Jaime Escalante, the AP Calculus teacher featured in the movie, “Stand and Deliver.”  She relocated to Northern California to attend Stanford University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English.  She currently resides in Silicon Valley, CA with her husband and young son Adam.
