Getting the Best from Your Team:
Expanding the Definition of Expertise
Presentation will be available for 1 week on the front page. After that, you must login as a member to see them.
Teams go through stages of development and activity, especially when beginning a project or facing significant change. At each stage, different types of expertise are needed, and they are not necessarily the technical expertise we all look for first. The PM BoK lists developing competencies to enhance team performance as one of the three significant areas of Human Resource Management, but what are these competencies and how do you know if you have them when you need them?
This session will address these questions by expanding the definition of “expertise” and demonstrating how different skills are related to team development. Topics covered include:
- the four stages of team development and what particular skills are needed at each stage;
- the roles people take in teams and how to identify and balance them at each developmental stage; and
- how to call on these different areas of expertise when they are needed.
Both the work on the four stages of team development and the system of roles in teams, developed by Glen Parker, are in wide use today.
