Project Management and the Tough People Challenges

Dealing with people and performance issues will be one of the most difficult matters you’ll need to face as a Project Manager.  Performance/people issues could be things like someone not meeting their deadlines, work products that don’t meet quality standards, people not prepared for status updates, not showing adequate urgency to resolve problems, someone not taking you seriously, one who can’t get along with others, someone who demonstrates unprofessional behavior, and the list goes on.  As the Project Manager, it’s your responsibility to point this out to the people who are not meeting your expectations, and to ensure that they make the needed corrections or adjustments in their work or behavior.  And it’s your job to take further action if they don’t, until the issue is resolved.

Before you decide that you’re now going to put the hammer down, you also need to make sure that you are not contributing to any of your people issues, because you could very well be doing so, unknowingly and unintentionally.

Things you will learn from this discussion will include:

1.      The need to clearly and concisely establish your expectations to the project team upfront, and review them with the team to ensure people have a common understanding.

2.      Things you will need to do that may require overcoming a great deal of hesitancy and fear on your part.

3.      What will happen if you don’t personally confront and hold people accountable with face-to-face or one-on-one meetings with them?

4.      If you think you might be too timid, and don’t have the ability or nerve to confront people on such matters, you are underestimating your abilities!

Speaker

Norm Oshiro, MS, EMBA, PMP, authored “Individual Performer to Manager - A Practical Guide to Career Advancement into Management.” It has received praise as a career and management guide from Kirkus Reviews (Top 10% of Indie reviewed books, Nov ’19), the San Francisco Book Review (Star Rating 5/5, Dec ’19), and Publishers Weekly/BookLife (Jan ’20, with sponsored author Q&A, Jun’ 20). 

Raised in a small, diverse community on the Big Island of Hawaii, Norm spent much of his youth at the beach, spearfishing and surfing instead of studying.  A college mentor offered him a new path. 

Norm holds a BA in Sociology (inter-ethnic relations) from the U. of Hawaii at Hilo, an MS in Meteorology from UH Manoa, an Executive MBA from USC, and a PMP. 

Norm spent 32+ years with Electronic Data Systems (EDS)/Hewlett-Packard (HP) – HP purchased EDS in 2008 – where he started as a programmer in Honolulu, transferred to Seattle, then rose to team leader, supervisor, project manager, account manager, then manager of EDS’ 192-person Southern California Systems Engineering/Solution Center in Los Angeles.  After acquiring his MBA, he moved into sales support, then into Project Management exclusively until he retired in 2015.  He spent decades working in the trenches, day in and day out, with organizations, teams, projects, and people, and where he also trained and mentored new leaders.

He wants to spend a portion of his retirement giving back to aspiring managers who are eagerly seeking advice, by sharing his hard-earned lessons learned through examples and scenarios of situations that he lived and worked through.
